Albarello (storage jar) with shield of arms

Deruta, c. 1490 - 1500

21.4cm (height)

tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica)

The decoration has residual echoes of the ornament on Valencian lustreware; compare WA1954.30. The inscription reads ?[N]Go[UNT]A GRATIA DEI (Thanks be to God ointment). Scratched on the underside is the mark 2 ? V, perhaps indicating the weight of the jar (thus facilitating weighing of the contents).

The arms, presumably for a religious institution or its patron, have not been identified.
